Unless you work in the oral healthcare industry, you may not keep up with the latest dental trends or advancements. However, you can rest assured those working at your local dentist’s office are. Dentistry is always changing, but what is brand new in 2024? Exciting advancements are happening all the time, so keep reading to find out what you might see the next time you visit your dentist’s office.

The Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI)

No matter how you feel about artificial intelligence, the reality is that it is here and unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon. Whether it is used for diagnostics, treatment planning, or surgical performance, its innovative and forward-thinking capabilities make it something to be desired by dental professionals.

Its use inside dentist offices is expected to improve accuracy, streamline operations, and allow for faster, more personalized care as well as reduced recovery times for patients.

Some of the most beneficial ways AI can positively impact the dental field include accelerating the timeframe for preventive treatment, more clearly identifying and discerning between the different types of cavities, and even collecting data and patterns of gum disease to better determine the underlying cause.

A More Natural Approach to Cosmetic Dentistry

Although the desire may be to attain a Hollywood smile, it may not be the best option for each patient. This is why dentists are looking to create more natural aesthetics that better align with an individual’s facial features.

Instead of providing more drastic changes, a personalized treatment plan may only call for subtle teeth whitening or orthodontics to straighten misaligned teeth.

Many patients find that even small improvements made to their teeth can change the way they see themselves, allowing for greater confidence and a boost in their mental and emotional health.

Advanced Technology for Minimally Invasive Procedures

Dental technology trends are focused on providing minimally invasive treatments that produce the same great results. Some newer instruments that are currently being used in relatively few offices but will become standard in the near future include

  • Soft tissue laser therapy with LANAP – This laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP) is an alternative, nonsurgical approach to gum disease surgery. By treating diseased tissues with its precise and targeted laser, it removes and kills bacteria without touching your healthy gums.
  • Oral cancer screening with VizLite® – Patients swish a liquid mixture around in their mouth for 30-60 seconds before a specialized light is used to view and detect and abnormal lesions that may be early signs of oral cancer.
  • iTero digital impressions – Instead of cold dental putty that requires you to remain still for prolonged periods, digital impressions take just minutes. A handheld device scans your teeth, gums, and bite to create a 3D model that is used to create a custom restoration for your smile.

These are only three possible trends that may emerge in 2024, but there are plenty more that dentists expect to see throughout the year. When preparing for your next appointment, make sure to ask about some of the latest advancements and see if your dental team is staying ahead of the curve.
